  • How Cryo DC Couplings improve fuel transfer safety

How Cryo DC Couplings improve fuel transfer safety

Safety isn’t negotiable when it comes to transferring cryogenic fuels like LNG or liquid hydrogen. Cryogenic fuels are stored and handled at extremely low temperatures, and even minor leaks or any kind of mishandling can lead to severe risks –  including explosions, operator injuries, or environmental damage.

    KLAW Cryo DC Coupling

Pacific Hoseflex’s KLAW Cryo DC Coupling is a game-changing solution engineered to make cryogenic fuel transfers safer, cleaner, and more efficient.

Also known as a Dry Disconnect Coupling or Dry Break Coupling, the KLAW Cryo DC is designed to eliminate spills during both connection and disconnection. It does this via an automatic valve system that seals both ends of the connection as it disengages –  which means no fuel leakage, no vapour release, and no operator exposure.

The core technology mirrors a standard dry disconnect coupling, however, the Cryo DC is fitted with low-temperature seals specifically developed to withstand the extreme conditions of cryogenic fuels.

    About Dry Disconnect Couplings

Enhanced safety through dry break technology:

One of the biggest safety risks during cryogenic fuel transfer is accidental spillage or exposure. The KLAW Cryo DC Coupling can dramatically reduce this risk through its innovative dry break system.

    • No-spill disconnection: Seals both the hose and the tank during disconnection.
    • Operator protection: Prevents exposure to freezing cryogenic liquids and harmful vapours.
    • Fire and explosion risk minimised: No fuel leaks means no ignition sources are exposed to volatile gases.

    Engineered for extreme conditions:

When you transfer fuels like LNG or liquid hydrogen you must have equipment that performs reliably under extreme stress. The KLAW Cryo DC Coupling is precision-engineered for cryogenic use, with strong materials and seals that:

    • Maintain flexibility and strength at sub-zero temperatures
    • Resist embrittlement and cracking
Ensure safe connection integrity across repeated use cycles

When you’re operating in environments that can dip below -160°C, standard equipment isn’t enough, but it’s where the Cryo DC excels.

    Kimg0799

    Failsafe Disconnection to mitigate risk:

When you take a closer look at the KLAW Cryo DC Coupling design, you’ll see that one of its key safety features is its automatic safety shut-off during accidental disconnection. If a hose is ever pulled or dragged while connected, which can be a common risk on busy worksites  – the coupling safely disengages and instantly seals both ends, preventing massive fuel release, fire hazards, environmental contamination and costly downtime or incident response.

    Environmental compliance & ESG alignment:

It’s essential to be fully compliant and sustainable in today’s highly regulated environment. The Cryo DC coupling helps your operations meet key environmental standards, including:

    • EPA and IMO regulations
    • ISO 18683 for LNG bunkering
    • Corporate ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) initiatives

When you eliminate spills and fugitive emissions, your business can meet compliance benchmarks and contribute to long-term environmental goals.

    Efficiency and safety:

The KLAW Cryo DC doesn’t also boost operational efficiency. Its tool-free connection and easy-grip handle allow for fast, secure engagement and disengagement without specialised tools or training. This enhances turnaround times, reduces operator training, lowers clean-up costs and can minimise downtime.

  • Seismic joints and their role in commercial construction

Seismic joints and their role in commercial construction

In commercial buildings, safety and durability are non-negotiable. Seismic joints are parts that play a big role in maintaining structural integrity, absorbing movement caused by earthquakes and large amounts of pipe movement, and preventing damage to critical infrastructure.

These specially designed expansion joints allow for controlled movement and reduce stress on critical infrastructure – especially in areas prone to earthquakes. At Pacific Hoseflex, we provide high-quality seismic joints like our VITALFLEX® Seismic Joints U Shape and V Shapes, performing in a range of extreme conditions.

    What are seismic joints?

Seismic joints are flexible connectors that allow buildings and pipe systems to withstand the unpredictable movements caused by earthquakes or large amounts of pipe movement. Unlike standard expansion joints, seismic expansion joints can move in multiple directions, absorbing shocks and preventing damage to pipelines and structural elements.

In commercial buildings, seismic joints are essential for structures located in high-risk earthquake zones or where pipes are subject to lots of movement. Whether it’s a hospital, industrial facility, or multi-storey office complex, these joints play an important role in preserving the integrity of vital systems like water, gas, and HVAC during seismic events.

How seismic joints benefit commercial construction

Seismic activity is unpredictable and the multidirectional movements that accompany events can put huge pressure on pipes and infrastructure. Without the right expansion joints, seismic activity can result in:

    • Cracked or broken pipes – leading to leaks, flooding, or hazardous gas escapes.
    • Compromised fire protection systems – putting occupants at risk.
    • Structural damage – requiring costly repairs and downtime.
    • Failure of critical systems – such as water and HVAC, impacting business continuity.

Seismic joints are not just an optional addition to buildings in earthquake-prone areas, they are often a mandatory part of building codes and regulations. Many regions with a history of seismic activity require buildings, especially commercial structures like multi-storey offices, hospitals, and shopping centres, to be designed with seismic protection.

Compliance with local and international building codes ensures that your project is up to standard and helps safeguard occupants and infrastructure during seismic events.

Seismic joints and their impact on building design and construction

While installing seismic joints may initially add extra costs to commercial construction projects, the long-term benefits are invaluable. The reduced risk of structural damage, improved safety, and a lower likelihood of costly repairs or system downtime post-earthquake can ultimately save businesses significant amounts in both repair and operational costs.

    Integration with other building systems

Seismic joints are an integral part of the overall building design, especially when considering the interaction with other critical systems such as plumbing, HVAC, and fire protection. When you successfully integrate these joints into a building’s infrastructure you can ensure the systems remain functional and safe under stress.

For example, in healthcare facilities, where the integrity of medical gas lines and water systems is vital, seismic joints ensure that these systems remain operational during and after an earthquake, preventing potential disruptions to critical services.

    Seismic joints for retrofit projects

For existing commercial buildings that need to be retrofitted for seismic protection, the addition of seismic joints can extend the building’s lifespan and make it compliant with modern safety standards. This is particularly relevant for heritage or landmark buildings that need to meet seismic requirements without compromising their structural or aesthetic integrity.

VITALFLEX® Seismic Joints: Engineered for safety and performance

At Pacific Hoseflex, we understand the critical role that seismic joints play in commercial buildings. That’s why we offer VITALFLEX® Seismic Joints, available in U Shape and V Shapes, engineered to meet the highest industry standards.

    Penetrant Testing

A low-cost, non-destructive method, penetrant testing identifies hairline cracks, leaks, and surface porosity on materials such as stainless steel, aluminium, and aerospace components. This process is conducted to AS2062 standards.

    Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

For ferromagnetic materials, MT detects surface and subsurface defects using magnetic flux. The process highlights cracks or discontinuities with visible iron particles, making flaws easy to detect.

    Radiographic Testing (RT)

RT allows us to evaluate the internal integrity of welds and components without causing damage. Using radiographic imaging, we can identify porosity, inclusions, and cracks to AS4041 standards.

    Continuity Testing

This test measures electrical resistance across a system, ensuring circuits are open or closed as required. It is particularly useful in systems requiring precise electrical conductivity.

    Holiday (Spark) Testing

Our plate freezer hoses are designed to meet the unique demands of the freezing process, providing the durability, flexibility, and reliability required for seamless performance.

    Plate Freezer Hoses

    How plate freezers work

To understand why high-quality plate freezer hoses are essential, it’s important to understand how these freezers work.

Plate freezers operate by placing food products, typically in cartons or trays, between refrigerant-filled plates. These plates make direct contact with the products, freezing them rapidly and evenly. The vertical design allows stacks of plates to rise and fall, accommodating for the loading and unloading of cartons efficiently.

This movement is critical to the freezing process, and flexible hoses play a key role in ensuring that the stackers can move without interruption. The hoses connect to the refrigerant system, delivering a steady flow of coolant while allowing the stacks to move freely.

    Applications of plate freezers

Plate freezers are commonly used in industries where rapid and efficient freezing is needed. Popular applications include:

    • Meat processing: For quick freezing of meat products, improving refrigeration index and reducing time to market.
    • Poultry freezing: Provides consistent freezing to maintain product quality.
    • Dairy products: Freezes items like butter and cream in uniform shapes for easier transportation and storage.

At Pacific Hoseflex, we offer a range of plate freezer hoses, including:

Plate Freezer Milmeq Linley Valley Pork

The importance of flexible hoses in plate freezers

The movement of plate freezer stacks means they demand a level of flexibility that rigid piping just can’t provide. This is where our PTFE and stainless steel hoses come in. These hoses are engineered to:

    1. Accommodate vertical movement: As stacks rise and fall, the hoses must flex and bend without restricting the flow of refrigerants.
    2. Ensure durability: Operating in cold environments with constant motion can wear out some materials. Pacific Hoseflex Plate Freezer Hoses are designed to withstand these conditions, maintaining high performance over time.
    3. Provide leak-free operation: A secure, reliable connection is essential to prevent refrigerant leaks, which can disrupt the freezing process or lead to expensive repairs.
