  • How to relieve stress on hose reel transfer systems

How to relieve stress on hose reel transfer systems

In modern offshore transfer operations hose reels have become increasingly popular for deploying, recovering and storing hoses. While there are many benefits, it’s equally important to address the potential stress factors on hoses and Marine Breakaway Couplings during the winding process.

Pacific Hoseflex is the Australian and New Zealand distributor for KLAW products. We provide:

    • Marine Breakaway Couplings.
    • Industrial Breakaway Couplings.
    • Dry Break Couplers.
    • Full Bore Marine Breakaway Couplings.
    • Emergency Release Systems.
    • Cryogenic Emergency Release Systems.
    • Camlocks.
    • Swivel Joints.

In a detailed white paper, the experts at KLAW delved into the topic of reducing fatigue on offshore reel transfer systems, providing a comprehensive and detailed explanation. Here’s an overview of some of their findings and recommendations.

About hose reels and Marine Breakaway Couplings

When it comes to managing hoses in transfer applications, hose reels are an extremely practical solution. They offer numerous benefits, such as enhanced storage capacity, improved safety, and more efficient hose deployment and recovery.

By utilising hose reels, operators can effectively organise and protect their hoses, reducing the risk of damage, tangling, and fatigue. Whether in offshore or onshore operations, the use of hose reels simplifies the handling and maintenance of hoses, providing a streamlined and reliable solution for fluid transfer needs.

Marine Breakaway Couplings also play a key role in preventing spills, protecting assets and minimising the risk of injuries. They play a critical function by shutting off the flow in both the upstream and downstream directions and they separate when triggering events occur. This includes excessive stress on the hose caused by vessel drift beyond set parameters and pressure surges.

When using both hose reels and Marine Breakaway Couplings several things can impact the stress levels of the hoses and couplings.

Hose reel applications – factors to consider

The main concern when using both these components comes from the interruption in the natural radius of the coil caused by the coupling’s presence. This is called coil discrepancy and can lead to stress on both the hoses and the breakstuds of the Marine Breakaway Coupling.

    The results of coil discrepancy

Coil Discrepancy determines the contact angle between the hose and the inner wound hose. Without a Marine Breakaway Coupling, the contact angle remains unaffected, but when a coupling is present, the contact angle becomes imperfect due to coil discrepancy. The length of the Marine Breakaway Coupling and the radius of the hose reel influence the extent of coil discrepancy and subsequently impact stress levels.

The length of a Marine Breakaway Coupling directly correlates with the level of stress points it induces. However, it can be mitigated by the radius of the hose reel. A larger reel radius helps to minimise coil discrepancy, thereby reducing stress on the coupling.

Alternatively, opting for a shorter Marine Breakaway Coupling can also contribute to a reduction in coil discrepancy, leading to decreased stress levels. By carefully considering the coupling length and reel radius, operators can effectively manage stress and enhance the overall durability of the system.

    Stress factors

When we’re looking at hose reels and Marine Breakaway Couplings, two stress factors come into play; weight impact stress and hose kink stress.

Weigh impact stress: This type of stress is caused by the physical weight of the Marine Breakaway Coupling and the displaced weight of the hose due to the imperfect contact angle. It directly impacts the breakstuds.

The KLAW Marine Breakaway Coupling is designed to resist bending moments and primarily respond to axial forces, reducing the chances of unintended activation. However, frequent stress on the breakstuds from hose reel operations may require additional maintenance attention to prevent fatigue.

Hose kink stress: When there is a space between the Marine Breakaway Coupling section and the inner hose, hose kink stress can occur, resulting in hose fatigue.

The KLAW Marine2 Breakaway Coupling – Pacific Hoseflex

Pacific Hoseflex offers the KLAW Marine2 Breakaway Coupling to address stress issues related to hose reels. The previous KLAW Marine Mark 1 Breakaway Coupling for offshore applications was the lightest and shortest on the market, with a flip-flap valve with alternative valve designs such as the poppet valve.

The KLAW Marine2 Breakaway Coupling is 15% lighter and 10% shorter than this original coupling, which exponentially reduces stress to hose reel applications and decreases fatigue on inner hose and outer hose sections as well as the Marine Breakaway Coupling breakstuds.

An easy reset facility is now fitted as standard to all KLAW Breakaway Couplings, allowing operators to service and reset the coupling without the need to detach the 4 couplings from the line. This reduces fatigue on the hose which is caused by the additional handling and interference when detaching and reattaching the coupling.

The KLAW Marine2 Breakaway Coupling provides an innovative solution to maintain the integrity and efficiency of offshore operations. By addressing coil discrepancy, weight impact stress and hose kink stress you can minimise the risk of asset damage, downtime and injuries.

  • How to optimise food and beverage transfer productivity

How to optimise food and beverage transfer productivity

Looking for an effective way to optimise the productivity of your food and beverage manufacturing process? One of the best ways to improve productivity is by choosing the right hose. The transfer of liquids from one point to another is an important aspect of the manufacturing process and it’s essential to have hoses that enhance the safety and quality of your products.

What to consider when choosing a food-grade hose

Food-grade piping needs to safely transfer products without the risk of contamination. They need to minimise the risk of malfunction and downtime and be able to withstand high amounts of pressure and extreme temperatures. Food-grade piping needs to be flexible, durable, bacteria-resistant, abrasive-resistant and kink-resistant.

There are a few things to consider before choosing a hose for the food and beverage industry:

    What product is being transferred

One key consideration when choosing a food-grade hose is what type of product is being transferred, as it will determine what type of hose you require. If your product is highly acidic or alkaline you will need hoses that are extremely resistant to corrosion. Foods or beverages that are highly viscous may require a hose with more diameter to ensure efficient transfer.

    The temperature and pressure

In the food and beverage industry, food-grade hoses can be subjected to fluctuations in pressure and temperature. Food-grade hoses need to be designed to withstand high temperatures and pressures without the threat of contamination or malfunction.

    The environment

It’s also important to consider the environment surrounding your food and beverage hoses. If they are located in a corrosive environment, it may be important to choose a hose that is made from highly resistant materials, such as PTFE. Similarly, in some environments, you may require a highly flexible hose.

  • The benefits of handheld XRF analysers for industrial hose applications

The benefits of handheld XRF analysers for industrial hose applications

Handheld XRF analysers are a critical tool in our industry as they allow for fast, accurate and non-destructive identification of the material composition of industrial hoses. This process is a key focus point of Pacific Hoseflex to ensure we only supply the highest quality products.

    What are handheld XRF analysers?

XRF stands for X-ray fluorescence and it’s a powerful, non-destructive technique for measuring elemental composition, from Magnesium (Mg) to Uranium (U), from parts per million to 100%. Handheld XRF analysers are portable, giving us the flexibility to test on the spot. This portability is especially helpful when products are large or heavy.

The results of the non-destructive material identification are shown on a built-in LCD, listing all elements and their concentrations. Our analysers are programmed to identify stainless steel material grades but can give readings on all metallic materials.

    How it works

    1. The analyser is pointed at the sample surface and produces an X-ray.
    2. The atoms in the sample absorb the X-rays and become ionised.
    3. The ionised atoms emit characteristic fluorescent X-rays.
    4. The analyser detects and measures the energy and intensity of the fluorescent X-rays.
    5. The analyser uses this information to identify the elemental composition of the sample.

    Benefits of handheld XRF analysers

Industrial hoses are used in various applications to transfer liquids, gases and other materials. They are often exposed to harsh chemicals, high temperatures and high pressures, so it’s crucial they are made from suitable materials to withstand these conditions.

    Accurate identification

The main benefit of these analysers is their ability to accurately identify materials. They can identify specific alloys and chemical composition within the hose and using X-ray, identify even the most complex materials including alloys, polymers and ceramics.

It’s critical to know the composition of a hose to ensure it’s suited for your application. Material identification is essential as the composition of the hose composition can have a significant impact on its physical and chemical properties. Its composition can affect the hose’s resistance to chemicals, temperature and pressure.

  • Overseas supply issues and how to avoid them

Overseas supply issues and how to avoid them

    Overseas Supply Issues 1024x544

Pandemic lockdowns continue to cause turmoil around Australia, causing significant delays across the majority of manufacturing industries.

These disruptions are being caused by continued lockdowns, a shortage of workers due to COVID-19 and factories being shut down around the world due to economic downturn.

Since the pandemic started in March 2020, everything from home appliances to cars have been delayed due to disruptions in the supply chain, leaving empty shelves and creating longer lead times when ordering products from overseas.

Unfortunately the hose and fitting industry is not immune to these disruptions. In the past 12 months we’ve noticed huge delays from overseas suppliers caused by an increase in demand as Australian suppliers’ stock limits plummet and prices increase.

In the past 12 months we’ve noticed huge delays from overseas suppliers caused by an increase in demand as Australian suppliers’ stock limits plummet and prices increase.

With the increase in demand for products, we’ve seen both an increase in freight pricing and overseas prices, which flows down and causes significant price hikes for goods being purchased here in Australia.

    Container Ship

A backlog of shipping containers stretch as far as the eye can see in Chinese ports as freight companies increase the cost of shipping containers, putting even more pressure on suppliers and consumers here in Australia.

But the backlog isn’t the only issue affecting freight being shipped from China. As an industry that relies heavily on stock sourced from Chinese factories, the China trade conflict is also affecting the supply and demand of hoses and fittings.

As an industry that relies heavily on stock sourced from Chinese factories, the China trade conflict is also affecting the supply and demand of hoses and fittings.

Throughout the last 12 months tensions have been rising between Australia and China and some significant restrictions and tariffs have been sanctioned. As Australia’s biggest trade partner, these issues trickle through and impact businesses here in Australia who supply products normally sourced directly from China.

    Avoid delays with Pacific Hoseflex

You can avoid these delays when you order through Pacific Hoseflex.

  • The importance of positive material identification

The importance of positive material identification

In recent years, there has been an ever-growing focus on Positive Material Identification (PMI). PMI is used on a wide range of components and plays a vital role in both quality control and safety compliance.

What is Positive Material Identification (PMI)?

PMI is the non-destructive process of verifying the chemical composition of components on-the-spot. It provides a semi-quantitative chemical analysis and is used in many industries including oil and gas, chemical, pharmaceutical, fabrication, aerospace and more.

In addition to certificates of composition, PMI allows us to check the composition of the component on location, at our premises.

    How does PMI work?

PMI can be carried out using a variety of analysers, both mobile and handheld. The analysers measure the exact composition and grade of the materials of your component and ensures the grade is as stated.

    Why is PMI important?

Incorrectly assigned stock, failed welds or inadequate grade of materials can cause catastrophic events in the fluid transfer industry, costing manufactures thousands, if not millions of dollars. PMI eliminates any potential incidents that could be caused by the incorrect composition of components by detecting these faults early.

PMI allows companies to ensure every component meets specific specifications and works to prevent incidents caused by parts with poor integrity.

    PMI:

    • ensures products have been manufactured with the correct material

    • ensures material has the correct standard and industry specification

    • ensures welded components have the correct material

    • can identify incorrect materials

    • can find mixed-up alloys.

    The Pacific Hoseflex PMI process

The process of identifying inadequate material grades is a key focus point of Pacific Hoseflex and our team go above and beyond to ensure all products that leave our factory are of a high standard.

An Inspection Release Certificate (IRC) from the mills allows for early detection of non-compliant materials. Customised IRCs have been developed for all our approved suppliers to ensure the product conforms both in quality and safety standards.

You can be sure that products don’t make it to our factory unless they have been signed off for release by qualified personal at Pacific Hoseflex and the mill/supplier. The process also involves checking the material certification prior to dispatch.

Once the product has arrived at our factory, we test it with a Portable XRF analyser and the results are compared against the mill certificates to ensure they are within tolerance.

XRF stands for X-ray fluorescence. It is a powerful, non-destructive technique for measuring elemental composition from Magnesium (Mg) to Uranium (U), from parts per million to 100%.

Handheld XRF analysers are portable and enable us to get lab-quality results on-the-spot to determine the next course of action.

Once the parts have been analysed, they are either placed into stock against a QR code, or moved into manufacturing.

We can use the XRF analyser throughout the manufacturing process to ensure the weld material composition is correct, mainly for corrosion resistant purposes.

If you’d like more information regarding our PMI process, please contact our QLD office on 07 5593 4292, or email salesqld@hoseflex.com.au, or if you’re in WA call us on 08 9468 2840 or email saleswa@hoseflex.com.au
