This month we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Pacific Hoseflex. As a fourth generation Australian-owned and operated company, we’ve withstood the test of time and evolved within the dynamic landscape of engineering. With a rich history, each era has had a profound impact on our growth.

From our humble beginnings to our current position as an industry leader, our story not only shows the evolution of Pacific Hoseflex, but the ever-evolving field of engineering. We recognise the remarkable contributions of everyone involved and the milestones that have shaped us into the company we are today. 

We had a chat with Pacific Hoseflex Operations Director Andrew Gray to give us insight into the incredible journey of Pacific Hoseflex over the past few decades.

The beginnings

Andrew’s great, great grandfather Tomas Gilliam was born in 1903 and was one of the first people to teach welding in Wolverhampton, England. During his apprenticeship in the Liverpool Ship Docks with Harland & Wolff, he was sent to Belfast Ireland to work on the Titanic to install a portion of the three million rivets in the early 1900’s. 

Tomas Gillam operated his own company called Ajax Welding, which was established in 1934. With his three sons, they built warships for WWI, and they all had associations with Cochran & Co, Scotland, one of the biggest boilermaker shipbuilders in the world. 

The next generation

Andrew’s grandfather Peter Dawson migrated to Australia with his wife and daughter Tina, after a promotion from one of the largest oil companies, Atlantic Union Oil, now Mobil. He started Hose Flex (Australia) in Kirribilli, near North Sydney in the early 60’s. In the early 70’s he purchased an office and factory in Brookvale, Sydney with branches in Brisbane and Melbourne.  

Today

Today, operating as Pacific Hoseflex, Tony and Tina Gray have continued the family legacy and are now operating a global leading fluid transfer engineering and manufacturing organisation. The Gray family, with support from long-term dedicated employees, have built a digital quality-endorsed company that supplies to a diverse range of industries.  

We’re immensely proud of our growth and as we mark this significant milestone, we extend heartfelt gratitude to our wonderful team, loyal clients, and supportive partners who have been the pillars of our success.

PTFE hoses and fittings

PTFE hoses excel in applications where extreme chemical resistance is required. They are ideal for handling chemicals such as acids and solvents and will maintain their integrity under the most demanding conditions. 

The Slickflex hose has a smooth inner and convoluted outer, ensuring there is no place for bacteria to develop. Both the Slickflex and Encapsulated hoses can be manufactured entirely encapsulated, made with the fittings or flanges overlapping with the PTFE liner to create one of the most hygienic hoses on the market. 

Our PTFE hoses are ideal for applications where cleanliness is important, such as food and beverage manufacturing. They can withstand high temperatures, corrosive fluids and varying pressures, perfect for a range of industries including pharmaceutical and cosmetic. 

These hoses are manufactured with a stainless steel outer braid for added strength and abrasion resistance and they are FDA-approved to meet strict hygiene standards. This makes them perfect for milk and dairy processing plants. 

Expansion joints

Each of our products are 100% tested and meticulously inspected by a dedicated quality control position and overlooked by our National Quality Assurance Manager, a position newly created. This role ensures Hoseflex quality is consistent across all branches nationally and that there is a continued improvement in practices and the quality of the products produced. Pandemic lockdowns continue to cause turmoil around Australia, causing significant delays across the majority of manufacturing industries.

These disruptions are being caused by continued lockdowns, a shortage of workers due to COVID-19 and factories being shut down around the world due to economic downturn.

Since the pandemic started in March 2020, everything from home appliances to cars have been delayed due to disruptions in the supply chain, leaving empty shelves and creating longer lead times when ordering products from overseas.

Unfortunately the hose and fitting industry is not immune to these disruptions. In the past 12 months we’ve noticed huge delays from overseas suppliers caused by an increase in demand as Australian suppliers’ stock limits plummet and prices increase.

With the increase in demand for products, we’ve seen both an increase in freight pricing and overseas prices, which flows down and causes significant price hikes for goods being purchased here in Australia. 

A backlog of shipping containers stretch as far as the eye can see in Chinese ports as freight companies increase the cost of shipping containers, putting even more pressure on suppliers and consumers here in Australia. 

But the backlog isn’t the only issue affecting freight being shipped from China. As an industry that relies heavily on stock sourced from Chinese factories, the China trade conflict is also affecting the supply and demand of hoses and fittings.

Throughout the last 12 months tensions have been rising between Australia and China and some significant restrictions and tariffs have been sanctioned. As Australia’s biggest trade partner, these issues trickle through and impact businesses here in Australia who supply products normally sourced directly from China.

CNC machining is extremely useful when you need high precision and accuracy and allows us to cut and shape parts to a predetermined size using an advanced software program. 

Our new CNC machines provide two types of precision machining including turning and milling.

Pacific Hoseflex has recently recertified from ISO 9001:2008 to ISO 9001:2015 – for design, development and manufacturer of fluid transfer systems, with a DNV internationally accredited company. 

We were first certified with ISO 9001:2008 in 2008, completing the detailed paperwork and following all the processes that are required to gain this certification.
